The Province of North America

Greetings and welcome to our Province of North America. We are very happy to have you visit our information page to share with you some of the activities of our 114 Sisters.

Our Province is comprised of the countries of the United States of America and Jamaica in the West Indies. Throughout our province, Sisters minister in many different areas including religious education, Church pastoral ministry, retreats and spiritual direction, teaching, counseling, health care, ministry to persons with A.I.D.S. and development by providing ongoing education in literacy, skills training and working to provide housing for the poor. And one of our Sisters is presently volunteering in a project to provide health and pastoral care for persons with A.I.D.S. in the country of Uganda, Africa.

Many of the Sisters in our Province are among the elders of our congregation, the wisdom figures, who have served in foreign missions for most of their lives and now offer a significant Ministry of Prayer and Praise for our world and our Church. Some are also able to volunteer, to assist others in whatever capacity is needed. They visit the sick and the lonely, take communion to the home bound, offer comfort to those in distress, teach English to new immigrants (ESL) and participate in prayer meetings.

We also have Sisters of our Province serving in congregational ministries in other parts of the world. One Sister is on the staff of
our novitiate in New Zealand and two Sisters give service at our General House in Rome.

As Marist Missionary Sisters, each of us is called to serve in mission beyond our own country and culture for some time of our lives. We set out in faith and often we set out again to respond to the many needs in our world. Along with those of us who are American-born, the Sisters in our Province originate from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Fiji, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Kiribati, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Tonga. We have a novice from Romania and a postulant from Trinidad. As you can see, being a Marist Missionary Sister is a journey into diversity where bonds of communion are created and deepened through the years. We hope you enjoy discovering more about our Province of North America on this site. Thank you.

Sister Jhorna Gomes celebrates her Perpetual Profession!

Sister Jhorna Jacinta Gomes made her Perpetual Profession as a Missionary Sister of the Society of Mary on Sunday, September 12, 2004, the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary. Before a congregation of several hundred at St. Luke Church in Belmont, Massachusetts, Sister Jhorna committed herself to Christ forever through the vows of chastity, obedience and poverty. Her commitment was received by Sister Georgeanne Donovan, smsm, Provincial Leader of North America. Sister Jhorna’s five year old nephew, Thomes Gomes, sang a Hymn to Mary in sister’s native language of Bangla as she signed her official Perpetual Profession papers. Following the signing, Sister Jhorna received a blessing from the Most Reverend Walter Edyvean, S.T.D. Sister Jhorna joins with all her other smsm sisters who celebrate their call to be joyfully given to God, for the Kingdom, in the Spirit of Mary.
